Travelling on a budget

So Been in cairns a week now and am on a tight budget, managed to get a car for $1000 with 8 months rego and done a deal with some awesome canadians who were heading home after their trip for all their camping gear $100 the lot still have accommodation paid up in cairns till 11th june but then going to hit the road and make my way south to sydney, am planning on sleeping in the car for the journey down, so will be perhaps 1-2 weeks depending on how much i want to see on the way down and also if i get anyone else to travel with me and share costs.
Anyone got any cash saving ideas? think y biggest expense will be fuel.. am in a falcon, 14l/100km average i think so around $500 for 3000kms hoping to pick some people up on the way to sahre costs though
