I'd recommend Brazil, too, having been there last fall. Rio is stunningly beautiful. But for that Afro-Brazilian vibe, visit Salvador. FYI, Brazil's capital is Brasilia, not Rio.
I love both. You will find nice people there
If you are looking for awsome landscapes, go to Argentina (Andes and Patagonia)
If you ar looking for beaches, colonial architecture, go to Brazil (Salvador is a best)
If you are looking for nature and animals watching, you can go to Pantanal or to Patagonia
And do not miss Iguazu falls at the border between the two countries!

I must admit I am swaying towards Brazil.
What is the main thing I'd miss from Buenos Aires that I can't get from Colombia, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil (countries I'll be visiting prior to Brazil).
Well spotted Berner, bit of a schoolboy error there as I did an A level in Geography and knew this ha! I understand Rio once was the capital, give me some credit 😉

Will, you can do both Brazil and Argentina. It just takes a bit of planning; and a look at the map.
One important thing to remember is that big cities have more flights; and that often means cheaper fares. So if you want to go from Bolivia to Brazil, it's better to fly from Santa Cruz (Bolivia's biggest city) than La Paz. And it's cheaper to fly to Sao Paulo (Brazil's biggest city) than Rio. As mentioned in my earlier posts, it's usually expensive to fly BETWEEN countries in South America; but it's less expensive to fly WITHIN a country, such as Brazil, which has three primary domestic carriers, TAM, GOL and Azul. So flights within Brazil are a relative bargain if you need to cover great distances.
It's important to remember that Rio, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires all have TWO airports. So keep that in mind when booking flights. Fares might be cheaper from one airport than the other. Sao Paulo, with a population of 11 million, is an excellent hub for domestic and international flights. You'll find the fare from Sao Paulo to Iguacu to be pretty inexpensive. You can cross over to Puerto Iguazu (Argentina), then fly to Buenos Aires. Or, you can return to Sao Paulo, then fly to Buenos Aires roundtrip. Or you can take the ferry from Buenos Aires to Montevideo (Uruguay), then continue overland to southern Brazil (Porto Alegre, for example) and continue north, either by bus or flying. There are lots of options.
You shouldn't miss Iguacu Falls. See them from both the Brazilian and Argentinian sides. The views are different ... one has the better panorama; the other gets you closer. Don't miss the bird park on the Brazilian side. I highly recommend Salvador. But one of the most spectacular sights are the quartz sand dunes of Lencois Maranhenses National Park. I've been to a lot of places in the world; and those dunes are amazing (as are the red dunes of Namibia's Sossusvlei). Sao Luis is the closest big city to the national park; and there are lots of tour companies that can take you there. If you plan to go, be sure to apply insect repellent on your legs, otherwise you're likely to get sandfly bites. Buy cashews. They grow them there; and they're inexpensive.
If you're going to Argentina, know that there is a parallel currency market. Everyone in Argentina knows where to change money. So avoid the banks and the ATMs. You can get pesos at a favorable exchange rate on the Brazilian side of the border at Iguacu.
I plan to be back in South America later this year or early next year. But for now (April 13), I'm headed to Europe, Asia and ....

I will be sure to check out the national park and Iguassu falls.
Also, I've had a think about it an I think I am going to try and fit both Buenos Aires and Rio into my trip, like you said internal flights are cheap.... I maybe spend less time in Bolivia, we'll see.
I'm booking my trip this weekend coming, so any more advice please post!

well , it depends on your interests.
both Countries are big. 1 Month it s okay, for an hop-on flight holiday.
But Ir recommand you to decide for one country , if your ´re want to dip into the culture and relax, in the meantime.
What do you prefer ? Beaches, Samba, big breakfast ? Than go to Brazil.
Or high mountains, Tango , roastbeef than go to Argentina.
You can touch each other country on the Iguacu Falls, but again : realizce the distance from Manaus to Ushusia/ Fireland
