Ok so I'm planning to start in Melbourne at the F1?

I'm planning on starting at the Melbourne F1 and then move to the Gold Coast and get a job in a bar or something. I have my work visa but how much would I need to take to get going ? Is anyone else in Melbourne for F1 or in March ? Thanks Jordan.

The AUD $5000 which the Australian government sets as a minimum requirement for eligibility for the WHV is a good minimum amount to get going. Most backpackers end up needing at least that much. If you live very frugally, you can stretch such an amount of money to almost two months. Figure it'll take you a month to find work, and then a month to get your first paycheck. As you see, that already leaves very little margin for error. I generally recommend twice that to be on the safe side and allow yourself to travel around for a bit first to get a feeling for where is actually nice enough to want to settle down there for a couple of months of work.

Accommodation around the time of the F1 isn't in as short supply as it is during the Australian Open, but I'd still recommend booking your hostel at least a couple of weeks in advance, just to be on the safe side.

I may have a job set up through my cousin who worked in a hotel at the Gold Coast so it's really just a mater of how much I need to take to get me started ?
