I'm looking at travelling to Africa (Namibia, Botswana and South Africa) July next year and am wondering if there are any amazing experiences with some of the tour companies that are available. I am thinking of using Nomad Tours or GAP Adventures any feedback would be great as well as any others to consider. Planning on doing the camping tour.

Been in the budget end of the travel industry here in South Africa for over 15 years. Can recommend Nomad's as good reputable operators - offering good budget tours. Don't know GAP Adventures to be honest. I'd also recommend Bundu/Wagon Trails as excellent operators - have a look at their tours www.bundusafaris.co.za

Thanks so much for the feedback! I'm now really trying to short list some tour companies but it's a bit overwhelming! Intrepid definitely seems to have some good reviews.
I travelled with Acacia and they were terrific!! They are a British company and you can find more on http://www.acacia-africa.com/
Great guides, cool routes and reasonably priced. I did the 2 week Kenya and Uganda trip to see Gorillas and we were lucky enough to go into rwanda - the first time Acacia had done so as a company and it was superb.
Great trucks, max 24 passengers, tons of space. Its particpatory, so you cook, clean and make camp etc.
Average age range 22-27 I would say

We did a GAP tour to South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland in November, and have nothing but praise for the entire experience. Great guide, great accommodation and food, great people, great everything. We saw and learned so much, and never felt like we were on a big tour bus looking out at the world. I'd recommend it!

Nomad had a link to the dossier for the trip for the Cape to Kruger 26 day tour that I am looking at and the price seems reasonable. I can't seem to find this kind of detail with other companies though. It listed links to the campgrounds etc. for pretty much every night of the tour which I thought was great.
i've traveled with both drifters and kiboko and loved both trips as well as tour operators. don't get too married to the specifics of a tour though, as things in africa tend to change at the drop of a hat (bridge washes out, etc). this is often why specific details don't tend to be published as westerners then try to hold the companies to what was published in the brochure when they can't produce. They will all have disclaimers explaining this. Drifters uses camp sites as well as the Inns they have throughout ZA & Namibia and they have their own camp sites in Bots.

don't use gap adventures in Africa, they are not even running any of their tours in Africa, well most of their tours in the world, they use a local company and resell those tours. They just are a big marketing machine with more sales staff then anything else. I went on a trip with them to Africa and the local guide told me that he didn't work for Gap Adventures, he had never even seen somebody from Gap Adventures. The tour was not bad but Gap should not be selling those tours as their own. They are a big fraud.
