Best Caribbean Island for Students?

Hi,

Haiti? Sorry, terrible joke.

I'd pick St. Maarten: heard it's very nice. Not sure whether you can get there cheaply from the US though, nor what their visa conditions are.

Margarita Island, Venezuela..... Its always sunny, cheap travel (buses or taxis or scooter rentals). Then theres the black market for exchange. Safe and very good rates (about 3x more than the bank rate). Great beaches and people there love to party!! I know you said Carrribean, but the island is in it.

Thanks for the responses!

Do you think Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, or the British Virgin Islands would fit my criteria at all?

I can only speak for T&T. T&T is a bit dangerous as there are drugs sold on the streets everywhere, literally. The beaches are ok at best but the north island has more better beaches but is harder to get to.

Cuba and the DR are good choices for students - there are some areas that are less-student-party-ish.

Other Caribbean islands can be a bit pricey and hard to get around.

Best thing to do is to chat with a travel agent - they've usually got their ear to the ground for this kind of stuff.

thanks guys, this has been a great help so far. One more thing....what have you guys heard of St. Lucia?

Hi,

I've been to Tobago twice. It is not at all dangerous (perhaps Trinidad can be, but Tobago definitely not). The 2nd I went I was 19 and on my own and spent 7 weeks there and had no problems. It is pretty cheap.. if you stay in guest houses rather than hotels. You can then also buy food from supermarkets to cook instead of eating out every night. It's definitely not a party island, but they have an awesome event every sunday night called Sunday School (nothing religious, its just a big beach party which all the locals and tourists go to) - lots of rum, reggae, bbq and good times. There is also one club on the south of the island but apart from that its just quiet bars/restaruants reaally. But AMAZING beaches. And not overcrowded with tourists at all, although the last time I went was 2 years ago?

Hope this helps.

Definitely you want to visit Cuba. It has all the requirements for passing an unforgettable time. It is relative cheap, has a great beaches, good hotels and people are cool. Also there is a good music and places to go at night! ..-snip-
