Hi Danny, I stayed in a guest house called The Riverline Guest House not too far from Koh San Rd in 2008. It was in walking distance to ksr, but in a quiet area neighbouring a few other guest houses, nothing like ksr at all. The rooms were clean, staff were really friendly, and price was reasonable. I can't remember exactly how to get there from koh san rd, but if you google it I'm sure you can find a map. I took a photo of their gate last time I was there, and there number was on the gate! It's +66 (0) 2282 7464. I remember it was on a tiny street by the river and really near to a park.

Why not try the Sukhumvit Road section of Bangkok. Backpacker priced hotels, bars, cheap places to eat at, access to BTS, malls, etc. Where the grownups go when they get too old for Khao San Road.

KSR is too far for one night anyway. Try Silom Road. Patpong is there so lots of nightlife and markets and hostels.
