Hi,
it takes about two and a half days (on the train) from hcmc to hanoi so would prob rule that one out if you only have a few days, plenty to do in and around hcmc day trips, beaches, nature reserves as for the flights book up early with air asia and be a bit flexable you will find a cheap flight
The distance between the 2 large Viet cities is further than it looks. I would not waste time on surface travel - use Vietnam Airlines. You might enjoy stopping in Hoi An for a very relaxing few days (Danang Airport). Hanoi is by far my favorite city (not as modern and businesslike as Saigon). Air Asia is the cheapest way back to Bangkok from Hanoi.
Totally agree with the last two. I took a bus from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh city over 2 weeks stopping off at all the little cool places on the way and it was still a rush. No point travelling all that way just to fly straight out.
We started off in Hanoi and worked our way down to Ho Chi Minh, we got a flight from Hanoi to Hue and then coaches down to HCM two coach rides were each 12 hours long.
I would suggest to get a flight to Hanoi from HCM they are very resonable. Our flight was with Vietnam airlines.
Shame you havent a bit longer to go to Halong Bay.
Are you flying SAIGON to BANGKOK cos ifya had more time you could try Delta trip----3 days/2nites it leaves from SGN by bus then series of boat/bus to CAN THAO [0/nite at budget hotel] 2nd day on water thru river markets & river islands to CHAO DOC on Cambodian border [o/nite] they give you a choice either drive back to SGN or follow river to PHNOM PENN for saame cost Did it 8 years ago for aprox $US30 i booked it at my g,house & they organised my Cambodian visa a great little journey
