I'm about to go to Australia, and want to know some sort of essential information from people that have experienced Sydney and the East coast. Where are the best places to go? Eat? Nightlife? that sort of stuff. As I'm planning to stay there from 4 - 6 months I was also interested to know where people lived long term? Hostels, studios, shared? And what sort of budget where people living on? what are the jobs like out there? Any information is very much appreciated
Alice
Hey Alice,
Highlights, finance and accomodation will depend which city you're flying in to and where you plan to travel. The highlights for me on the east coast were:
- The Daintree and Cape Tribulation, Barrier Reef (outer reef trip) and Atherton Tablelands - all near Cairns
- Mission Beach for the amazing beach
- The Whitsundays for sailing and snorkelling
- Eungella National Park near Mackay for some hiking, swimming and the platypus'
- Fraser Island for the lakes, camping and scenery
- Byron Bay, good relaxed vibe and surfing
- Blue Mountains for hiking and scenery
There are pics of most of the above places in my photo album.
I lived on about $800AU a week which included fuel, accomodation and tours. Have fun!
Thank you for the info, The Whitsundays are one of the main places I want to go whilst i'm travelling in Australia. I looked through your photos and all the places look so beautiful and i'm so excited now. I'm flying in too Sydney but hopefully I'll make some decisions there on where i'm likely to go after
Hi Alice,
I'm pretty much doing the same with the intention of staying in one area for a chunk of time while trying to work and see everything.
Accommodation wise are u just hosteling it or have you had any luck if your looking for alternative cheaper accommodation for staying in one place? Also crimbo time/NYC - have you already booked somewhere or u going with the flow!
Apologies for the many questions- as u posted questions yourself!
Good luck with ur trip
Hi, I'm finding it hard to make decisions because i've never actually been to Australia and thats why i'm going to wait until I get there. As I'm staying for around 4 -6 months in Sydney I don't really want to stay in Hostels, I'm going to look for some sort of shared accommodation because I've read it can be cheap, studio flats - depending on how much money I can get from a job. I'm not too sure though, do you have any plans?
Alice
Sydney is not a cheap city, especially with rent.
It depends how much you are earning but I'd expect it to be a fairly generous amount if you could afford to rent an apartment on your own.
I rented a 3-bed apartment with four housemates (two of us shared a room lol) and it cost us $80 a week each in rent excluding bills.
Sydney is a fantastic city and I would move back there in a heartbeat but be warned living costs are high so be prepared to balance what is desirable with what is affordable.
Perhaps try a listings site? there are always plenty of adverts asking for housemates.
