Travel Pacakge is always expensive , you might try to book all the things online which may more "budget"... = )
I just backpacked to Kota Kinabalu alone on late June , everything is very nice and well.
( I meet some nice guy from Taiwan in there and we are friend now ^^ )
But you may feel disappointed you are not easy to join the local tour, since they are always required at least two persons join together....
