I got a-30 day Schengen visa from Italian Embassy. While applying I mentioned that I would travel only in Italy. However, while in Italy I was tempted to change my itinerary and eventually made an exist from Lisbon.
Afaict, failure to immediately report any changes to itinerary constitutes a violation of visa conditions, but (if found out after the fact) hardly a very serious one unless you travel from a country that - in your case - Portugal has serious problems with. Even though the freedom of movement within EU territory does not extend to visa holders, in practice it is almost impossible to put a stop to it, and visa-issuing countries know this.
If you had the poor luck of finding an overzealous embassy official upon your return then, yeah, you may have been reported as a visa offender in SIS. I guess you will just have to wait and see what happens if you apply for a short-stay visa with another Schengen country. Remember that you can always ask for the grounds of refusal, should this happen to you.

Do posts #1 and #3 originate from the same person? Are you a Pakistani national? In that case, I think your visa violation will be considered a big deal after all. Europe is extremely cautious in admitting people coming for countries suspected to harbour terrorists... it's unfair, I know, but that's what the world is like these days.

yes u shouldnt have done that...it is now extremely difficult for you to get schengen visa from any country..you should have come back from italy than apply again for C visa which would allow you to move to other schengen states freely...anyways whats done is done..try to go somewhere else like australia or Canada...may be because of a schengen visa these countries will allow you to visit them...you dont want any rejection on your passport if you are a pakistani national..

Thanks for your advice. When I was given the visa, I was also given a card which, inter-alia, stated that "a Schengen visa allows you to enter and to travel within the countries that are: Austria ......................." There was hardly an clue that it is restricted to Italy only as per visa application. Probably, there would be thousands of cases like mine. Not all Schengen countries insist on reporting back and are satisfied with documents presented.
I made a mistake, now doubt. It was more due to misunderstanding. I travel a lot and have so far been to over fifty countries ( not including those with short stay on official business) including Australia and Canada as suggested by tokyo. I think that I would forget Europe for few years and concentrate of some remaining countries like Japan, Newzealand, Ireland and some African and Central American Countries.

Actually you did not break any rules going to Portugal! It's absolutely legal, especially if you really visited Italy. It's a well-known fact that Italian embassies are among the most nasty ones, so I was not surprised with your story. Just be confident if you apply for any Schengen visa again!
Thanks dda for showing me light at the end of the tunnel. Once bitten twice shy, I would take a lot of time for next trip to Europe. Hopefully, good sense would prevail, in the meanwhile, and Schengen Visas would be issued in their true spirit.
In fact, if one googles for “Schengen Visa Violations”, there is no mention of "a change in itinerary".
