I would really like it if we could at least change the image at the top of our blog. I like the template's look, but why am I stuck with the same image as everyone else using this template?
You can. Simply upload the image you would want to use, then go to Template -> Edit Your Template in the blog management area, find the part in the CSS at the top where it says:
#center {background:transparent url(img/7/maple.png) no-repeat top center;padding-top: 230px;clear:left;}
and change "img/7/maple.png" to the url of the image you uploaded (e.g. "http://photos.travellerspoint.com/319573/yourimage.jpg", which you can find by right-clicking the image after it's been uploaded and viewing properties, or copying the image url.)

I did that, and my image is much smaller than the template's.
Seems like it would be a lot simpler to provide customizable templates where you can just drop in a new image.

Yes, you would need to add an image that is roughly the same size as the one you are replacing. That would be the case even if it was a 'drop in a new image' kind of template. The reason for doing it this way is that now you can edit ALL our templates, not just one and be stuck with it. This solution is 100X more expandable than having a simple 'replace header image' type of setup (there have been members that have automatically had a different header depending on which country they are writing about; that would be neigh impossible using a fixed template), but it does require some tinkering early on. We might still go the other route at some stage though, but it probably won't be soon.
have done a pretty nice job on their customization if you are looking for inspiration.
