Questions about Hostels

Has anybody had a problem booking hostels in advance? What do people do with their suitcases in hostels when they are gone all day? I'm a little concerned about leaving it in a dorm room that I will share with a few people and I could put a lock on it but somebody could just use a razor. I know some hostels have lockers but suitcases don't fit in them right? I'm assuming people use the towels & sheets at hostels instead of bringing their own but has anybody had a problem with them? thanks!

I spent a month in Italy and Greece two years ago, mostly staying in hostels. I made reservations for all of them online ahead of time. The only issue I had was when my flight from Athens to Mykonos was cancelled and I had to take a later one. I contacted the place through Hostelworld with my new arrival time so their shuttle would pick me up but the place in Mykonos was too low tech and their shuttle never picked me up from the airport. They went so far as to laugh in my face when I complained, apparently because joining the 21st century was a ridiculous request of them. Funny how they can take my money online just fine. Considering it was in the middle of the night and I was traveling alone, it was very stressful. If your plans change, you have to use a phone to contact the hostel.

I packed very lightly so I just had a carry-on sized travel bag. When the hostel provided a locker, I used it. When they didn't, my bag sat on my bed. Nobody ever touched it but it really didn't matter because anything valuable I had was on my person at all times. I also brought a microfiber towel to use because I could never be sure if the hostel would have towels to rent. I hung it on my bed to dry during the day. They dry really quickly so it worked out great.

Simply leave all your good stuff at home and you won't have to worry about it.

Whilst I'm definitely not condoning their laughing in your face, the money taken online is actually taken by the booking provider, in your case Hostelworld. But each property definitely has access to email, because that's how they get the bookings from HW, Travellerspoint etc They also get them in their online area, so yeah, access to the internet is kind of a requirement to even have managed to get the property up on HW to begin with But we see this problem here from time to time too with that require last minute changes in locations that are more remote. Typically the best course of action tends to be the phone in those cases, and even then sometimes one boggles at the answers given...

amotravl, I'd always take a towel with me when staying at hostels. You can usually rent one if you don't have one, but most will not include a towel with your bed. Sheets are more common (in fact some hostels won't let you put your own sheets on to avoid bed bugs), and can almost certainly be rented if not included. Of course the quality can be pretty up and down. When I was backpacking I tended to have a sleeping bag with me as a backup.

well in 12 years iv had no problems. No one wants to go thru your dirty clothes. I dont lock my stuff up, just my passport and laptop if I have it with me.

are the sheets & towels clean?

are the sheets & towels clean?

Well, they should be washed, but I've noticed that people's definition of 'clean' isn't always the same as 'washed/cleaned'. And being in heavy use, often they won't be 'pretty'

hah yes they are clean. And when you've been on a train for 17 hours arriving in the middle of the night, you find yourself lowering your standards anyway.

If you want gauranteed comforts of home stay in a 3-4 star hotel if you can afford it.

In Europe (East and West), most hostel dorm's (shared with maybe 11 other strangers) have lock-up facilities - such as lockers or tin barrels with padlocks on the top. You pay a deposit for the key, that's returned when you hand it in on checking out.
