Travel Insurance

Hi,

I was quoted about $350USD for travel insurance for a 5 month trip (US-NZ-AUS-Bali-Bangkok-India-Egypt-Madrid-home to the US)... not sure if this is good or bad? but included with all flights seems like a good package deal. would like to hear what others have experienced!

I have done quite a lot of travelling and I have found World Nomad to be a good option for cheap insurance. There is a gap to pay with any claim, but it's there if something major happens, which is the main idea as far as I'm concerned. As far as I know it is available to citizens of any country, but if you google it you will see all the details.

G'day

Not sure if all this applies to your situation.

I recently paid AU$1000 for travel insurance for a RTW trip over three months. Our total outlay so far is about $35,000 on fares, accommodation and packages.

Because we are both in our late 60s, one essential we need cover for, over and above the travel costs, is medical cover. Here in Australia we are both well covered but when we are abroad we fear the likely costs of medical treatment.

At our age too, there is a likelyhood that we may need to cancel due to ill health.

For us, we don't ever question travel insurance when we go overseas.

From my experience, the travel insurance does not need to be the one offered by the travel agent. Shop around, you'll find there's considerable difference in price with little difference in benefits. Check them out and pick the one that provides you with the cover you are likely to need at the best price.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

It's a topic that comes up so much on T/P and the replies are nearly always the same.... 'Never' go with the cheapest, ever. Always look at the policy wording before you buy - or part with a single coin.
Consider this.... 'Where am I going - are the hospitals any good - if I have my passport and cash stolen, or simply lose them, is the cover the same - if I miss a flight - if I miss the deadline for a paid hotel room - if my rucksack is stolen - if I contract a nasty disease???? - etc. etc.'
Once you've considered all these questions, look at the policy and see if it covers your needs. If it does, then start comparing others that do the same. Then - and only then, is it worth considering the cost - over the cover.
Cheap, as we all know - is not always good.

Starting from home in Vancouver Canada, will be driving south through Central and South America with our own vehicle, and then on to Africa and Europe. Our provincial car insurance only covers us in Canada and the US. Cdn Auto Assoc, BC Auto Assoc don't have answers. Would appreciate suggestions, information or experience about vehicle insurance coverage for many countries? Do we need to get insurance for each country we drive in? Are there any international insurers that can offer one stop shopping.

Many thanks.

The cheaper the policy the more corners they are cutting. In Australia Covermore is the best policy. You can get cheaper policies, but if something happens you want to know you will get covered. Things like the Volcano incident that caused aviation problems in Europe were not covered on most travel insurance companies, but Covermore did cover. The most important thing is that medical and emergency dental should be unlimited coverage. Most other things won't cost you your house, but skimping on the medical side of things can mean you're up for hundreds of thousands of dollars and even millions if you were in hospital for long enough in the US.

Never go without medical insurance we used World Nomads when we did our 12 month round the world. I had to claim, had a problem and had to go to the dentist in the US and had no problem receiving back the money from them. There is a maximum age of 65 yrs so I can't use them now but would recommend the company.
