After a year of being extremely frugal finally starting work again and l want to take my lovely lovely man away to say thanks - lve got enough airmiles to take us both somewhere in Europe from Heathrow.
Amsterdam. If I had to make a second choice.. Amsterdam again.
I'm trying to think of an alternative. Now let me think.... Oh yeah, got it.. Amsterdam. To broaden the choice a bit.. Holland.
Cheapest flights from LHR will probably be with BA (British Airways). The flight is very quick, around an hour - and being the UK's national carrier, you'll be permitted to take a nice lump of hold luggage free of charge (UK budget airlines charge for hold bags).
KLM, Holland's national carrier - also does non-stop flights from LHR to Amsterdam Schiphol, but they tend to generally be much more expensive. They 'Do' have cheap deals on certain dates, but you have to search for them.
Even if you're not into airports, other than getting on and off planes - take a few moments to explore Schiphol.
Situated in one of Europe's smallest countries - it is one of the world's busiest airports, has 6 runways and the most amazingly efficient set-up for the onward traveller.
Unlike Heathrow, where the trains will only get you into London - from Schiphol you get to just about any point in Europe making no more than one change - and in many cases, no change at all.
Get the train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal (about 15 minutes) and then just walk until your feet won't let you go any further. Right next to you will be a cheap hotel and wonderful menu.
The people in Amsterdam are about as friendly as they come and the things to do in Holland's capital city are countless.
Oh - and no, I don't work for the Holland tourist Board. I'm British and live in Britain. It's just that despite the immense travelling that I've done over the years to every continent, I still rate Amsterdam as one of the greatest cities on the planet.
Cheers for that - we went to Amsterdam last year - lve been a few times now and it is a great city so we are probably looking to some where different.
Wanting to use my star alliance airmiles so BA and KLM wouldnt be feasible!!
Sorry to be awkward!
The first city that comes to my mind as a recommendation is Sevilla; it's just perfect for a weekend - lively, warm, plenty to see and very walkable. I visited it in February last year, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Star Alliance might be difficult, though - maybe Brussels Airlines has a good connection from LHR to BRU to SVQ, or TAP Portugal from LHR to LIS to SVQ?
Head East, stretch those airmiles. Try Tallinn, cold but not sure about wet.
Or try Sofia? Istanbul?
