A while ago I took my last name off my TP profile as I didn't want my name to show up on google searches (particularly as I've got quite an unusual surname so there aren't many of me!). It would be quite nice to be able to show my full name in my profile though, so would it be possible to allow TP users the option of selecting whether profiles show up in internet search listings? It's not a big issue, but I thought it might be an option that other users might like too.
It's something I've thought about before actually. Like you say, it might be nice to be able to add those details, yet not have them show in search engines. In the 'old days' even the name was mandatory, and that really caused some issues, hence the option to just delete first/surname altogether. One problem is that even if you block off pages from Google, they will sometimes still try and put it in their index based on what they 'think' it's about. There's some ways around that too, but that would also mean that people searching on google for 'bex76' might not find the profile either (mind you, that might not really be an issue?).
It wouldn't be an issue if people couldn't find me under my alias, as only people on TP know me as that anyway; likewise I don't mind if people can find me under that, since if they know my alias it's likely they are already on TP anyway so I couldn't do much about them finding me!
Obviously I'm happy for anyone on TP to be able to access my profile but as I'm quite a private person I don't like the thought of anyone I know being able to find out bits of information about me. One example is current or prospective employers, who after finding me on TP may get the idea that I'm not likely to stick in a job very long because I'll want to go off travelling again, and they'd probably be right!
