Off to europe in a week, few last questions!

Well let me first off give my travel plans so that some of these questions are easier to answer.

Pocket knife for personal protection: not a good idea at all. If you end up in a situation where you would be tempted to use it, that would most probably make matters worse. Leatherman's great for cutting bread, though.

If it excludes trains and accom, €4000 for 46 days is plenty. Including both it would still be enough, but tight. ISIC is nice if you have one anyway, but not worth buying just for the trip: you can get most discounts by simply proving you're <26.

Pack light: the less you bring, the less you can loose. Amsterdam, Dublin and Venice will be chilly, Berlin will be bitterly cold.

I did it in winter many years ago when an airline laid me off. I so remember that unheated train station in Munich - I could see my breath inside!

Do you know about the "Hotel kiosks" at all major Euro train stations? An alternative to booking hostels on the net, and very useful. The lady at the kiosk in Madrid used 2 phones at the same time to find me a room - I was impressed.

Wait till you experience real coffee in Italy - you'll be spoiled for life.

The good old aviation industry, i am waiting for a date to OKC for air traffic control so hence the trip to euro. Anyways, Daawgon what to wear for winter in europe? Jeans, khakis, long johns? Due trains ever get major delays due to storms thru-out euro?

yes trains do get delays in europe due to storms and we have had quite a few this year. If you are leaving in a week then I would think you may be past the worst of it but you will just have to keep your fingers crossed.

I agree with bentivogli's post, and you definitely want to wrap up well. It's cold cold cold at the moment, even for Dublin that's normally reputed to be quite mild (night temperature nowadays do stay below zero celcius (i.e. less than 32F).

Try layering instead of bringing bulky clothing items, that are also hard to launder (e.g. wool jumpers). Fleece jackets are lightweight and travel well, while keeping you warm. And rain jacket. Some sort of waterproof in any case. Rain plus cold won't be fun.
