Economic recession & traveller safety?

Hi. Planning a three-week trip in southern Europe, with the idea of mainly getting around via trains, taxis, and on-foot.

Should clarify, perhaps: we're not paranoid about the prospect of being held up. But just heard a truly bizarre story the other morning (on the local station of our national radio network, Canadian Broadcasting Corp) about a recent incident on the streets of Milan.

When it comes down to it the pickpockets do this as a career it is there main source of income for some of these people, I have been pickpocketed once in my life and a few friends have as well the common denominator in all the stories I have heard have been the person geting pickpocketed is vulnerable for some reason in my case and my friends I was extremely drunk on the way home from a club therefore I had no money left and all they got was a couple of cards. Be carefull on your way home from a night out you may want to only take out one bank card and as I did keep it in your pocket as opposed to your wallet. Pickpockets will usually initiate some kind of personal contact in my case the guys came up and started talking to me about me being an aussie and then threw there arm around me and said they love aussies in a friends case they danced with them along the street. Point is if your on your way home drunk and a person comes up to you who you didnt already meet in a club you should prob be a little wary.

Yes, thanks for this. From what you wrote, I can easily imagine the kinds of situations that travellers would be vulnerable in.

One thing I was wondering... The economic recession has hit hard in so many countries. I'm wondering if more people have been driven to crime, due to desperation from loss of their employment, etc.

Just use the same common sense like you would at home...

...unless you think Europeans are more likely to rob you?

The low class doesn't have that much problems with the economic situation, as the welfare is as high as before. I don't see a safety problem c
