Travelling by car is always a better option as you dont have to depend on the public transport and you will have the flexibility to make changes to your travel plan, but i would advice strongly againsts driving yourself.
Getting a driver is always a better option.
There are plenty of car rental/Taxi operators in Kochi, who will have a 7seater 'Toyota Innova' for rental.
Charges will be mostly arround Rs9 to 11 per km and you will have to provide the driver another 150/- to 200/- per day for his expence.
