Australian working holiday 2011

Hello!

I have a friend who is doing the same, but starting in Sydney, I will show her this forum and maybe she will get into contact with you! good luck!

Hello!

Myself (22) and a friend (23) are leaving for australia on march 1st!! Getting into melbourne on the 3rd and have our first weeks stay sorted which is a little bit of a relief.
doing a year long working holiday and are both nervous about the money side of things! both have £2500 (about 4000 $AUS) and due to the recent flooding/cyclones in brisbane/queensland are pondering going west first instead of east. we are keen to get work fairly soon after we arrive, but are unsure as to where to settle after melbourne, adelaide looks lovely but is it good for backpackers? we haven't planned too much as most people say to just go with the flow once you're out there, which i like the idea of.

if anyone is in the melbourne/st kilda area around march then give us a shout!

Hi!

I arrive in Sydney on the 7th May 2011. I have pretty much my first week sorted but thats it. I got my visa through a couple of weeks ago

Although the weather has been bad in Queensland some people I have spoken to have said it might work in my favour. They are going to need people to help with the clear up. From what I have heard Oz rely quite strongly on backpackers for jobs like this.

I don't know much about work beside Melbourne as I am planning on heading north, this could all change when I get there though.

Hi Claire & Melissa,

I had the same query, hoping to be in oz in May but was thinking of flying into cairns and working my way down to syndey and melbourne side. I plan to travel the coast and work as i go along and im hoping to settle in either melbourne or syndey for a few months as ive friends there!! Would it be better to fly into cairns and work my way down or vice versa?

Aoife

Seems most people fly to Sydney/ Melbourne and work their way up, but I dont think it really matters. Suppose the weather is something to look at, just depends on personal choice I guess

Hi claire!

Working to help clear up/etc sounds really good, I was looking to do work like this or work along the harvest trail but was worried some farms might have been badly damaged from all the recent hubub, i suppose we won't know until we get there though!

Aoife,
I think that most people do tend to start south and work their way up, but this only seems to be because of the magnitude of the melbourne and sydney airports, i don't see anything wrong with heading south from cairns weather permitting!

Thanks very much for you replies guys! I think I am leaning toward going East from melbourne up the coast first, and just taking the experience as it comes! The harvest trail tends to go east first stopping off in tazmania which i really like the idea of, but like you say things could all change once i arrive! so much to decide!

So much to decide is right Thanks a mill for that, i think ye are prob right! im going to look into flying into either melbourne or syndey in may so claire i may see there

The clear up etc sounds really good as well, that sounds ideal as ill def have to do some harvest work along the way!!

Do ye plan to settle anyway after ye have travelled the east coast or just wing it and see how it goes?

Hey everyone,

Im arriving in sydney march 10th and havent sorted accomodation yet but thinking of getting the harvest work over with early so can enjoy the rest of the time and not worry about doing it.
Hoping to travel the east coast also, hoping the weather will be good.

i really like the idea of being constantly on the move but inevitably will have to settle somewhere to save up money before heading off again, as funds will only last so long! i like the idea of staying in sydney for a bit, or even better settling on the gorgeous east coast if i found adequate work, but winging it seems to be the way forward. i will have books on me to read whilst out there so that i'm not completely lost haha!

also i was wondering if anyone is taking a netbook with them? as pretty much all my mates say that i should take one (nothing too expensive obviously, just something light and easy to store photos on etc), but i am worried about the obvious risks of taking it! however... i think i probably will. sort of answered my own question there haha
