Travel tips for China and Japan

Hi! I am going to China and then to Japan this Tuesday. Can anyone tell me some traveling tips fast.Thank you

You've left it rather late. If you are doing it yourself the best thing you can do is pick up the Lonely Planet guides to those countries.

For information we would need to know if you are on some kind of tour or doing it yourself, and where you are going in those countries. Presumably you must have an itinerary for China since they ask for one when you get your visa (though you do not have to stick to it).

China is BIG and rather than spend endless time on trains I found this time of year (after the Chinese New Year that is) I could walk into an airport and pick up a flight for not too much money.

Many cities have "Chinese Travel Bureaus" and someone in them who speaks English and is helpful to tourists on finding accommodation, what to see, etc.

You can walk around central Beijing fairly easy though there is quite a lot of it and there is a subway system that is easy to use though typically crowded in rush hour. A map is very helpful (a real street map and not a tiny tourist giveaway). The wall is easy to visit nearby at Badaling.

The terracotta warriors you can do yourself, with a taxi from central Xian. Do look in street markets.

Japan is expensive. Tokyo more so though there are lots of mini marts where you can buy food and drink rather than going to expensive eating places.

If you get the train in from the airport, there is an office (open office hours only) which can help you find accommodation in Tokyo if you have nothing booked. Going back, you must book the non-stop train the night before, or take the local train to the airport which takes a lot longer.

Some of the cities have subway systems, like Tokyo, which are easy to use though you will need some coins (press destination and feed in coins to that value for your ticket.) Again a good map is handy.

I bought a Japan rail pass in Hong Kong before going there (you could not buy them in Japan at the time) and used the bullet train to get about very quickly (Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, etc). Local trains take you from mainline stations to smaller destinations.

For more information you need to be more specific.

Note. If you plan on using an ATM card in either place, tell your bank and make sure they take notice. Even though I told them I was going to Thailand my bank still froze my debit card account till I contacted them. Take along a copy of the details page of your passport.

Old tourist tip. Never pass up a toilet. (Also take some toilet paper with you.)
