Crossing into Vietnam from Laos

I am trying to make a border crossing from Laos to Vietnam. We attempted a bus from Vientiane to Hue but were told it was unavailable until next week. We then travelled further south to Savannakhet hoping to have better luck. We haven't, the bus station has a sign posted that all service to Vietnam is suspended for a week. We were unable to find out why- if the buses are out of service for the holiday or the border is closed. We aren't sure how to proceed or what other transport is available. How would we find out if the border crossing is open if we could arrange a sawngthaew? Will there be transport going in Vietnam from the borders to Hue or Danang? We couldn't find a website with up to date information on border closings. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Sarah,
I am only guessing, but it may be due to the Tet celebration going on in VN right now. I was in HaNoi over Tet years ago and the entire country basically shuts down for a week. That may explain it.
