hi, im going to china for 6 weeks from around late july (work doesn't allow me to travel out of peak season) money is an issue and want to travel as cheap as possible but get the most out of it i can... i have heard that it is cheaper in the south and i know i want to go to Guilin at some point.. to save money i may try and avoid staying in the larger cities and wondered if anyone could suggest any good places to visit and possibly how much money i would need to last 6 weeks (living cheap but still enjoying!) i am going with a friend who i play music with, if we were to take small travel guitars could busking me a way of making some extra cash ? thank you for any help
I think you'd have a lot more luck making money teaching English than playing guitars.
I confirm. Teaching English there really pays. All what you need is a good English accent and a proof of qualification.
i agree on that but i wouldn't really have the time as i only have about 6 weeks, possibly less... do you know roughly how much spending money i would need for this length of time? just so i have a rough estimate i know it all depends on where abouts you go.

I have been to 20 provinces in china. If you prefer countryside: I highly recommend a trip in Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. From Kumning (capital of Yunnan) you can make your way up to Dali and Lijiang and to the amazing Tiger Leaping Gorge. From there take your way up to the Tibetan areas of Yunnan and Sichuan and go down to Chengdu. You should not spend more than 100 Y a day (GBP 9), including lodging, food, transportation.
If you want to go Guillin, my advice is to skip Guillin and head down to Yangshou. Later take your way up to the also amazing dargon's backbone rice terraces in Longsheng (still in Guanxi province). Guangzhou province is also very beautiful.
If you are very adventurous, you can always stop along the road at a small post and ask a motorbike rider to take you to some nearby village. You may find the most amazing places you can dream of. The real stuff in china is not necessarily at the tourist spots. You can always stop in any dirty, ugly town and visit the local market. It's always fun. It's easy to get lost in China: I travelled once a route recommended by LP and I met only 2 foreigners in three weeks.
If you really like amazingly scenic roads - couple of tips: 1) tibetan areas, 2) direct (!) road from lijiang to the lake on the north-west of yunnan province (through ninglang); 3) a road that has seen three travellers only (sichuan province): between south sichuan-tibet hghway - juloung - mianning.
If you fly into HK: HK very expensive. You better off heading quickly to Shenzen and catch a bullet train to Guangzhou. From there easy to take bus to Yanghsou/Guillin.

Note: you need to book sleeping ticket quite in advance sometimes. Although, you can be lucky. Don't take seat for long journeys, especially open ticket.
If you want to fly within china, book it on: ctrip or elong - one of them is a bit difficult to book with foreign credit card.
China is a very safe country with lovely people. You just have to watch out for the traffic in big cities and hold your seat tight sometimes on the bus...
One important advice: you will find very useful to have a Lonely Planet book (that has the city names with chinese characters too) and buy a map at a local book store! You can always point at the place you want to go! Otherwise, you will have great difficulty getting around...
