Hi all,
going to the USA in March, starting in California then Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico Arizona, then back to California HOPEFULLY!!!. Using a Chevy rental, can anyone advise on small CHEAP motels like average prices/ availability etc I can use (have used the net to search) but most on the net are quite expensive, Im not proud so almost anything will do. Previous trips I have gone coast to coast (East to West) and "slept" on the bus and explored during the day, another time I rented a SUV and slept in the back, now Im getting a bit old for that. Any help appreciated

"Days Inn" are everywhere and I've stayed in many of them. They're nothing fancy - most have a restaurant (although you don't have to eat there) with OK food - and the rooms are very acceptable. Nice thing about them is, they're fairly flexible with check-in/out times and their rates are good.
Plenty of cheap options in the states when it comes to motels, and if you stick with the chains you are far less likely to end up in a hot sheets motel which rents rooms by the hour.
If you carry a smartphone or laptop - you can usually even just book last minute via one of the many websites like hotels.com and be able to compare rates to get the best deals.
Of course the cheapest options are sites like hotwire, or priceline (the bidding option where you can make a lowball bid) usually will allow you to find something for US $30 or so a night except in the cities where the prices will be a lot higher. Still I've stayed for $20 a night in plenty of states that way in very decent hotels/motels.
that said, places like the Super 8 chain and motel 6 tend to be very cheap in terms of chains.
We did this USA trip in 2009. Most Motels are OK and fairly rated.
