Sort of stole the following from a fellow traveler who did a similiar route in 2010:
Thinking of redoing the route to"
BA 2 days
Ushuaia 3 days
El Chalten 3 days
Iguazu 2 days
BA 2 days
Is November better? What do you guys think about the Argentina pass on airlines?
A very doable plan.
I'd book your accommodations in BA ahead of time as hostels and cheap hotels there can be very full and sometimes don't have any beds available at the last minute.
In terms of tours you can pretty much arrange everything when you arrive BUT you might need to be a bit flexible, or a bit creative again at times things are full. I found that getting a flight to Ushuaia took more time than I had planned since seats were sold out for four days in a row when I arrived there - which wasn't a big deal in reality but could be if you are on a tight schedule.
That's not to say you shouldn't do it when you arrive, but if you find the seats aren't available right away make some plans to do Iguazu first, as it's easier and has more flights/trains/buses and do that while waiting for your Ushuaia tickets to come.
Or you can do what I did, which was check with about 30 different travel agents until I found one who got me the tickets when I wanted them but for a premium of about $15 each (I have no idea how they did it, since no one else was able to help me).
Nowhere else was there that kind of problem, and since buying your internal flight there is so much less expensive in Argentina than from outside the country (by a factor of 4x to 9x based on the quotes I got) it does make sense to buy them there, but to have some backup plans if you can't make one or more of your chosen destinations.
And I loved Mendoza and the Tigre Delta if you are looking for charming. Colonia, in Uruguay also fits that bill and is just a 90 minute ferry ride from BA definitely fits that bill.'
Good luck.
I am postponing until November due to finances and timing! I hope the weather cooperates, somewhat, when we venture there in November. I am already excited.
The route has changed a bit to reduce locations b/c of travel time. I want to be able to enjoy myself.
So now we are in the planning stages of our trip for November. I should have a few details wrapped up this wknd and then i would like to post my final routing for critique again this wknd.
6 people are going with multiple comings and goings. Should be interesting!!!!
