Hi All,
First, buy yourself European breakdown insurance for your car. A garage can convert your headlights for driving on the right. Spare bulbs are handy and are supposed to be carried in France. They say an extinguisher too and they are fairly cheap. A good road Atlas of Europe. Often book remainder shops will have them fairly cheap. Take a torch, foot pump, small can of oil. A roll of duct tape may come in handy. Bottles of water. Umbrella for April.
Be aware that fuel costs noticeably more on a motorway than in town, at a supermarket (as does food, drink, etc) Some fuel places are shut on Sundays. 24 hour pumps in France accept French credit cards. Not British ones.
Obviously check your tyres including spare, brakes, all lights working, radiator for leaks, check oil, including the axles, that no pipes show any wear, that the timing chain looks OK, if you can see it, that the clutch cable does not look worn anywhere. Screen wash bottle full and working.
Speed traps are rare but there are radar cameras about. Some put a sticker where they can see it to drive on the right. It is too easy starting off early in the morning with no traffic about or even leaving an eating place to forget and drive on the left.
Remember clocks forward one hour as you cross the Channel. I use the tunnel now, not the ships. Lots better, quicker and often cheaper. A short distance from the Calais terminal and you'll be on the motorway to Belgium. unless you want to see some of France first?
Advice: If you have some nutter in a hurry behind you, get out of his way. In Germany I have seen people flash up police cars because they were "only doing 100 mph". Drive at your own speed and take your time. It is when rushing that people make a mistake when driving abroad.

Try to choose your routes that are served by ferry links too. It will be a long and tiring drive to the continent as you will be covering so many countries on your way. So it is good to drive for a few hours and then board a car ferry that will help you to relax and regain your energy before continuing your drive through the continent. Besides, it takes very less time to reach another country and most of the European ports being well connected with the roadways, you can conveniently proceed towards your destination.
