My partner and I are traveling to New York for the big 40. I was hoping to head to either East Hampton or South Hampton over the weekend of the 27th May to the 29th. I do know this is Memorial day weekend and am finding it really hard to book anything. Can anyone help? I mean I'm nearly willing to rent someones garage (:.

Good luck with that. You won't find anything cheap. Your best bet might be to stay in a nearby town, but even then I'd expect at least three figures a room for memorial day weekend. You are in competition with 20 million New Yorkers who want to kick off the summer that weekend - as it's the unofficial opening of the summer beach season.
Maybe if you don't mind couch surfing you can find someone to put you up, but even the campsites are expensive that weekend. Pretty much the most expensive weekend of the summer save for the Labor Day weekend in September.
My husband, child and me are also travelling to NYC and keen to spend a couple of nights in the Hamptons around April 17th. Not sure where would be best to stay, Montauk, East Hampton or South Hampton? any suggestions as to where is best to base ourselves and what would be the best value accommodation? In fact any help with suggestions for Cape Cod, Boston and anywhere en route would be great. We're driving so reasonably flexible.
Also planned to fly down to Washington from Boston and then drive back to NYC stopping along the way in Philadelphia. Is this a worthwhile itinerary? We arrive and depart from NYC.

You'll be there in the offseason so you probably won't have a problem finding a room and if you book at the right time or via a site like priceline you might even get a deal. Personally I'd stay out near Montauk to get more of the feel of the island since the Hamptons won't really be in season yet - and you won't get the same kind of overpriced party scene that you usually find out there.
As to your itinerary it's a very doable one, but you are visiting the beach/coastal areas at times when the water is VERY cold so how much you'll really enjoy the beach scene is kind of unknown.
There are plenty of nice little towns and things to see along your route, but few that are exceptional. If you have specific questions though feel free to message me.

Driving north from DC, it's all expressway driving through Philly and up to the NYC area. I'm personally not a fan of Philly (I was born there, but there are more interesting places). I suggest taking the from Lewes, Delaware to Cape May, NJ, and driving up the coast route. The Jersey shore has some great places to stop (Cape May, Ocean City, Atlantic City) and even better seafood restaurants.
When down in DC, I recommend driving a few hours south to Colonial Williamsburg - a really nice place to see American history in action.
