Colon is the most dangerous city in Panama and one of the worst ones in Central America. Take extra precautions and try to arrange a taxi from a reliable source to pick you up and drive you at as quickly as possible.
It's basically a slam town with high poverty and serious crime rates. All travellers are advised against visiting Colon as being a victim of a crime is quite likely. Read wikitravel, fco.gov.uk and other websites - and pls take them seriously.
Otherwise, Panama is a nice country and beside Colon and some parts of Panama City, you should be safe.
Didn't want to scare but Colon has a very bad reputation...
