Hi Will,
I'm heading out to Australia in a few weeks, leaving on the 7th March. I'm going solo, planning to hang about in Sydney mostly, explore Byron Bay, do a bit of surfing here and there and then check out Melbourne.
My brother lives in Sydney (which is a big reason for me going out) but before he lived there he went through the whole hostel thing and said he couldn't believe how friendly everyone was! I'm quite nervous about going, but if you think about it, everyone's in the same boat! You just have to smile and be friendly!
Have you looked at any hostels in Sydney? I'm thinking about going to one called WakeUp, its got awesome reviews and sounds pretty fun.
As for day trips, definitely Byron Bay, I've heard its amazing. China Town, the Zoo, and Palm Beach has come highly recommended off a few of my mates!
I'm an 18 year old female by the way, easy going, fun, friendly and always up for a laugh.
