Myself and my mum are travelling from October and one of our countries on the list is Australia, which we will be in for December and a part of January. We fly into Cairns, and fly out of Melbourne, and obviously we're hitting Sydney which we wanted to do for the festive period and new years.
But, we don't know what to do accommodation wise. We don't want to skint ourselves out, but also don't want to be out in the sticks and away from it all. We were considering that Host thing, but we would prefer to be on our own agenda. I am in my twenties and my mum is in her forties, and we're both the adventurous and party type, so we're not opposed to staying in lively areas. We're just after help and advice from people who have been there at that time of year.
My advice is to book early as Sydney fills quickly for that period. Obviously the closer to the city you are the closer to the party you are, most of the action is around Sydney Harbour for New Years.
I stayed in over Christmas and New Year just gone and thought it was ace. I'd recommend it to anyone. Given it's a hostel (albeit one of the more expensive ones) it's not going to break the bank either - it's more like a hotel than a hostel.
As timtravels said, you need to book it as early as possible. I think the rooms went on sale for the YHA on 1st May last year.
Christmas Day I done the typical tourist thing and went to Bondi Beach. For New Years, as I stayed at the YHA, I also paid extra to go onto the roof top terrace to watch the fireworks. Failing that, depending how close you want to be to the Opera House/Bridge for the fireworks you will have to get out there early for a good vantage point!
