hi me and my partner are planning to traveling this year to vietnam, thailand, cambodia, aus and nz but cant find out when is the right time of year to start and in which direction to go, idealy we would like to go to north vietnam working down through cambodia to thailand but it seems difficult to find routes that go in this dirrection, could anyone give us a bit of advise on this. thankyou
Right now is high season in SE Asia, but my favorite time to start this would be very early March. I think you want to stay away from mid-winter and mid-summer since you're going Down Under. I just got back from Vietnam and Laos in Dec - you might want to include Luang Prabang in your plans (a beautiful and unspoiled town that will soon be overrun with tourists soon - it's that nice and unique in Asia).
I don't know what you mean by routes (are you talking roads?) I agree that it's best to start in N. Vietnam. You can use the train to Saigon, but I prefer Vietnam Airlines for the longer distances. Out of Saigon you can catch a combination bus/boat to Cambodia or fly. The roads in Vietnam are fairly dangerous (terrible drivers), and tourists are not permitted to self-drive.
Next to Luang Prabang, my other favorite places are Hanoi, Sapa, Hoi An and Dalat (all in VN). I have no experience in Cambodia, and only Chiang Mai and Bangkok in Thailand. I prefer the undeveloped countries to Thailand - I think the people are much more down to earth.
