I am 23 this spring so have decided while i am still 'young' to head on down to oz this july i am spending a month in NZ/Australia (possibility to extended if i like and funds allow!), originally i was going with a mate, but they have pulled out. I fly out 29th june to auckland, spend week with some family then head over to sydney, thats all i have plannied at the moment, i dont wanna tie myself down to much as i am in no rush, i dont have to be back in the uni till late september!! i am new to solo travelling, can anyone recommend any good backpackers hostels in sydney and also where are the best places to go in july..weather wise? cant go back to the UK as white as i left!!
my favorit was 720 on George St. right next to YHA central ... either of these are good, but I think its easier to meet people @ 720 because its smaller. YHA central has a roof top pool. please note that the dorms at the oh so trendy wake up are really small... Also check out the new YHA on the rocks.. I hear that is very nice .. they were building it when I was down there. Oh, YHA Glebe is also good, but a bit outside the city center. And most of the places @ kings crossings are really poor.
July... would be a nice time to hit the northern cities in OZ if you can avoid the rain. I think Melbourne is great any time of the year.
i'm heading to australia in September on an arrival package with Ultimate Oz and they have booked me in for a few nights at a hostel called Wake Up. My mates brother went backpacing in australia last year and they stayed there and said it was better than most hostels and it has its own bar which i guess could come in handy.
Someone on another forum told me about a brand new hostel near Wake Up called Bounce, so that might be worthwhile checking out. Being new it should be clean.
At this stage i plan to spend a week or two in sydney and then go travelling up the coast to byron bay and fraser island.

i did Ultimate Oz too. They were genius, totally loved it. My group stayed at Wake Up and the bar there is called the down under bar. Fantastic but we also spent many a night around the corner at a place called Scubar which is definitely worth checking out.
As for travelling in July, after we did ultimate oz a few people from my group & I bussed it up to byron bay and then went all the way up to cairns and cape york. July is winter in australia and most places dont have proper heating, it was freezing even after coming from Uk. Cairns and the Whitsundays were stunningly beautiful and by the time we got back down to sydney there was plenty of work and we all had a brilliant Sydney summer xmas/new year.
