My Partner and I are thinking about travelling into Mexico for around a week in October this year. We do not want to go to Cancun as it is to touristy and expensive, so we were looking for some advise on where to travel.

I suggest you take a look at , or shortened to: Zee-what. Fishing village, a zocalo, decent beaches. Cheap places to stay in town and the big flash resorts of Ixtapa are just 10 km away. Stay in Zee-what, visit Ixtapa if you want discos, upscale restaurants, nightlife. Another place I liked was . Pretty, not crowded. Good luck with your search.
It's been decades since Zihuatanejo was a fishing village-it's now a small Mexican city much dependent upon tourism.
Still an OK place but not in any way exceptional-unbridled development is slowly strangling the place with raw sewage flooding the bay regularly now.
Also Please Note-the short form of Zihuatanejo is Zihua 'ZEE wah'

"I has been over 10 years since I have been there, but according to wikipedia, the fishing boats still go out. Should we now call it a fishing city? Zihua was rated the second best sailfishing in the world by Sport Fishing Magazine. It was dependent on tourism back in the 90s. Just not as overwhelming as Acapulco.

"I read about the too much growth and sewage on wikipedia. That is really a shame. Too many people ruin almost all tourist destinations. What is really upsetting is the drug war has spilled over to Zihuatanejo with several deaths. Very bad news for a tourist spot"

Hello Amanda! I grow up in Manzanillo so I could be helpful just in case u need help there. Actually I'm working in another state (Guadalajara) but I usually travel to Manzanillo because my friends and family are living there.
Manzanillo is a very peaceful place and it is focused on nature environments, you won't find out so many places for night life. The common people (foreigners) visiting Manzanillo are people looking for peace and good food. Most of the local people are friendly and helpful but you should be aware about there are people trying to get money from you (starting with the transportation services). Beaches are mmm -ok- but you could find out more beaches in Tecoman (at 30 mins from Manzanillo), some of these beaches are virgin places and you can be yourself there; if you decide to go to Tecoman or any other place in Colima (the state) don't hesitate and contact a tourist guide (I think this apply for any other state in Mexico because the recent war against the drug traffic).
