Alternative Inca Trails

Just wondering if there are many less travelled trails up Machu Picchu. It's something i've always wanted to do but i would prefere a more intimate/authentic experience. Cheers

Hi

There are lots of different trails that lead to the Machu Picchu ruins, and most can be booked a few days in advance in Cusco. They end to be less crowded and cheaper than the classic Inca Trail.

You can also do a jungle treck, which includes rafting, biking and zip lining and which is pretty popular.

The Salkantay Trek is brilliant. Slightly more of a challenge and off the beaten track than the Inca Trail and it lasts 5 days, but it is absolutely beautiful scenery. I went with Dos Manos Peru, v.good agency from my experience. Enjoy!

The alternative trails are:
Salkantay trek to MP 5days/4nights
Lares trek to MP 4days/3nights
Choquequirao 9days/8nights to MP
Choquequirao 5days/4nights to MP
I recommend -snip-

The Lares Trek is a really good alternative, it lasts 3 days instead of four and is so much quieter. I did it and I think our group only bumped into about 6 other people the whole time. We also had loads of interaction with locals, and some really cute children. We were trying to cross a river at one point and this adorable little boy rolled his trousers up and walked through the freezing river to show us how it was done, so funny!

The Trek also goes higher than the Inca trail on its pass and has no steps!

Although it doesn't trek right into Machu Picchu like the Inca Trail does....

Hope this helps!

good

Cheers for all the help. It's been really useful
