Hi, I will be departing for my RTW trip on 4th June. I will be gone about 11 months visiting Russia, China, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, NZ, Fiji and USA. I am taking with me my new Canon 1100D. I just have a few questions:

I take normally 2x 16GB and 2-3x 8GB Memory Cards with me. But thats just enough for 6 weeks. (shooting in RAW)
No idea how much photos you take, but maybe a Imagetank of 80GB would be enough?
So you could take 2x 8GB cards with you and transfer it every day to the tank.

I'll soon be leaving for 3 months and I'm taking 48 GB of memory cards. I'll be backing up to my laptop, a 1 TB external drive, and a 750 GB external drive. Each external drive is stored in a different bag (I'm carrying a second bag for the first time) and I'm also going to periodically export my 4 and 5 star images to a USB flash drive that I'll keep with my passport in case everything else gets stolen or destroyed.
The key to efficient backups is to never let your photos live only in one location. Two is better, three is best. While in Peru I had my netbook hard drive fail and had to start backing up photos to my external drive (only one on that trip) through hostel computers. It was feasible, but less enjoyable. I also then didn't want to delete images off the memory cards in case that drive failed. For what it's worth, I think the drive on my netbook failed because of altitude. Inexpensive drives can have issues operating at higher elevations.
I know a computer is bulky, but something to think about is what you're doing to do with 11 months worth of photos when you get home. I take my laptop so that I can organize my images every few days. I sort them into collections, rate them, add keywords, and do basic edits for uploading to my blog or social sites while I'm away. When I get home, I at least have some sort of structure for dealing with thousands of images that I want to compile into a book, or export for stock sales.
A lot of travelling photos really like Macbook Airs because of the low weight and fast speeds that come with an SSD. The price can be a barrier though, and I'm still lugging my Macbook Pro. You might find a netbook works well for you though. I was running Adobe Lightroom 3 on an Acer Aspire until the drive crashed.
