risk of being refused entry to the USA with no reason?

My wife and I were toying with the idea of driving from coast to coast (SF to NYC) with a rented car this June.

Yup, every country still holds the right to deny you entry if they feel like it, regardless of what papers you hold.

If you have nothing to hide then generally you have nothing to worry about. There are glitches in the system every now and again, but look at how many people enter the US legally each year and how many are refused. If you are hiding something, or are worried about something, then maybe it's best to consult the US consulate in your country.

This is basically a way to avoid being sued. They don't plan to deny you, but if you show up with counterfeit currency on you, or if it turns out you are carrying papers that show somebody how to construct explosives--then they obviously will question what your motives are.

Look, don't fret about it. As long as you don't do something stupid like get drunk on the plane and start threatening people (think about the movie Bridemaids), then you have nothing to worry about.
