In order of least expense to most
Hostels
Finding a roomshare
Renting a room/apartment via places like Craigslist -Budget hotels outside the city and commuting in each day and/or - Priceline something (you can sometimes get a nice hotel for under $90)
Some cheaper hotels on the west side near Times Square
then the normal hotels.
I do know people who have gotten decent hotels in Manhattan for about $70 a night, but you have to plan well and in advance to get those rates usually.

Good advice above. I would check the hostel option in both cities. I do suggest you look at Hard to beat free! Read about it decide if it is right for you. I do suggest you only look at couches offered by females. Just makes sense IMO. I can help if you hit Vegas! Good luck with your planning.
