Sort of. It's may be the biggest, and it's probably the oldest area for backpackers. But it's not the only and definitely not the best. The Anjuna market is something to see and can't be missed if you are there when it's on, but I wasn't a big fan of the beach. I much preferred Palolem, which was also a backpacker place last time I was there (8 years ago). Arambol was also great, with a backpacker scene.
yeah you are thinking right. Anjuna beach in Goa has been a hippy hangout since the 1960's ad is a popular spot with young backpackers.
I found Anjuna to be higher priced restaurants and guest houses, with a seedy element of people trying to sell you drugs. Much preferred Arambol in the far north, or Palolem in the far south. Rent a motorcycle or scooter in Arambol and you can explore the whole coast of Goa.
