Thailand Help!

Jenna,
You have roughly 18 days to get this done. BKK is worth 3 days IMO. Then you can fly direct to Koh Samui (KS) on , or fly to Surat Thani (ST), ferry over to KS, or overnight bus or train to ST, ferry. You have to decide on time vs money. Bus is cheapest, then train, or fly. I think I would fly BKK Air right to KS. Advance booking should make the flight affordable. Or BKK-URT on Air Asia, ferry over. Certainly cheaper, but lose several hours with bus to the docks then ferry to KS. Take a look at your here.

After KS & Phangan, ferry back to ST. Then bus over to Krabi. I would forget Phuket, plenty of beaches around Krabi plus Phi Phi. Fly back to BKK from Krabi.

Here is my suggest for your time. 3 days BKK, 7 days KS & Phangan, travel day, 6 days Krabi area, travel day back to BKK.

Jenna, you have to decide what islands are more important to you. You could stay with KS & Phangan, add Koh Tao, then ferry to KS, fly back to BKK. That would be less hectic than including Krabi, Phi Phi. Good luck with your planning.

Hi Jenna,

I'd like to propose you island-hopping (or beach hopping) route
Upon arrival to Bangkok you can arrange a combo-ticket to Koh Tao (train + ferry). IMHO this is more comfortable than bus - you can sleep in overnight train (2nd class sleeper with fan is Ok). And of course this is cheeper than flight. You'll arrive to Chumphon station early in the morning, then short transfert to the pier and you are in the ferry to Koh Tao. Koh Tao is a "diver's island". It means that all the divers dive somewhere in the sea during the day and you have all the beach for you only (Ok, Ok, may be some other people ). After few days in Koh Tao take a ferry to Koh Phangan. Check Lunar Calendar to ensure be there while full Moon to take part in famous Full Moon Party. From Koh Phangan you can easily reach Koh Samui by ferry. After few days on Koh Samui you can arrange transfer to Krabi (ferry + minibus). From Krabi you can take ferry to Phi-Phi then to Phuket.
See prices/schedule here: http://www.phiphi.phuket.com/schedule.htm
And finally you can catch direct flight from Phuket to Bangkok by cheap airline AirAsia.
I didn't make suggestions how many days spend on each place - is up to you. You can easily re-schedule your itinerary or even skip some points (for example fly back to Bangkok by AirAsia from Krabi).
But I agree with Mike that you need at least 3 days for Bangkok. I'd prefer to stay in Bangkok at the end of the trip, so I suggest you the same

Mike has provided you with a suggested route with transport options including his love for Krabi (Hi Mike - 6 days? lol). I'm not being critical as I've been to Ao Nang/Krabi twice and enjoyed my time there. Phi Phi is accessible from Krabi though.

Another suggested route: Bangkok - Trang (fly or overnight train). Trang - Krabi (minivan). Krabi - Phi Phi (ferry). Phi Phi - Phuket (ferry + minivan). Phuket to Ko Samui (plane or minivan to Surit Thani then ferry to KS). KS to Koh Phangan (ferry). KP - Koh Tao (ferry). KT -Chumpon (ferry). Chumpon - Bangkok (overnight train or bus).

With only 18 days you are going to be forced to make compromises.

Whatever you decide I always offer this piece of advice: if you intend to shop, leave your time in Bangkok till last, that way you won't be carrying around all your purchases. I did this my first 2 trips - shopping at MBK Centre, Pratunam for clothes, and Chatuchak Market (open weekends only) for everything else.

Thanks everyone, ive had a think and what do you all think about this idea.....bangkok for 2 nights, fly to koh samui do that and phangan in 7 days as suggested (maybe have a day in koh tao) then fly to krabi for 6 days then back to bangkok for the last 2 days?? I've decided to leave out Phuket after doing research and alot of people have said its not all that and would much prefer to go around the Krabi area?? What do you think?x

Jenna,
Your itinerary looks OK. Decide once on Phangan if the ferry over to Koh Tao is worth your time. Forget flying URT-KVB. Buses leave every hour starting 6am for Krabi, 3 hours, 140 baht. Get over to Talaart Kaset 2 bus station in ST. I would not use a travel agent or ride the minivan. Safer and better ride on the a/c bus IMO. I would allow one day to when in . You can arrange a boat in Krabi or from Day trip Railay first. Hard to beat having an island all to yourself. Forget Phuket, crowded & expensive.

Yes Steve 6 days Krabi! Island hop, Railay, over to Phi Phi for 1-2 days, fly KVB-BKK. Jenna, good luck with your planning.

If you do go to Phuket - visit Phuket Old Town and if you want to investigate the caves in Phang Nga on a canoe choose John Gray's Sea Canoe.
