Can I leave the airport between connecting flights?

I have never had to use connecting flights, but this christmas I'm flying from Scotland to Finland. I have to change flights in Amsterdam and there is about eight hours between the flights, and I was wondering if it would be possible to leave the airport between the flights. I tried to search for some information but couldn't find any, so I thought that maybe someone here would have information about this!

Shouldn't be any problem. Generally the only times when you can't do this, is when you're in the airport on a transit visa, and/or would need a visa to properly enter the country. Since the Netherlands and Finland are both within the Schengen area, being allowed to be within the one should be the same as being allowed to be within the other. (If you're Scottish, you (for now) have EU citizenship, so that wouldn't even be an issue anyway, but otherwise it could be relevant.)

Note: When arriving at Schiphol (Amsterdam airport), head to the baggage carousels, and then just exit from there (assuming you're on a connecting flight on the same booking, so don't need to pick up baggage and manually check in for the second flight). Head for the main arrivals hall, where you can buy a train ticket at the yellow and blue machines, and then descend the escalators directly to the train platforms. The train to Amsterdam Central station takes 15-20 minutes, although you could just as easily head to Leiden (also 15-20 minutes) or Utrecht (30 minutes). All three directions have trains leaving at least once every 15 minutes during the day, and as smaller / quieter cities, they're perfectly suited for exploring for 5-6 hours.

Thank you, that cleared oretty much everything up!
