Hello, I've never backpacked before and so far only have plans to travel to Oz in early 2013, however after sifting through lots of online forums and backpacker sites, India seems to be extremely good value for money. From what I've gathered its not most popular destination in the world , and seems to be considered one of the more difficult. The more I've read the more i want to go. Advice from anyone who has traveled to India alone would be great. Or anyone who is thinking of going there anytime soon.
im going to india in 1 month. very excited
So do you have a meticulously planned agenda of places to be and booked accommodation or are are you planning on mainly just seeing where you end up finding accommodation at the time? (having never traveled before I'm not sure what the best way to go about it is) I was going to book somewhere for the first few nights to get my bearings and then it seems pretty easy and cheaper to find places once there. Are you going alone?
hey joe,
I've never travelled before but going away for 10 months in november this year and india is actually the first stop on my RTW ticket. Again like yourself, i read a lot about india and it too sounds pretty amazing and crazy, although frustating and difficult. But what the hell jump straight in the deep end right? That's exactly what i was thinking really. It should make all the rest of asia and s.america seem a lot easier haha
Only planning on spending about 4/5 weeks there, land in mumbai, then thinking about heading goa for a couple of weeks and then just working up the coast again and then do the golden triangle before flying out of dehli.
From a friend who's travelled there recently i've heard you can travel on around £80-100 a week pretty easily so great value for money i reckon.

Hi, your trip sounds awesome. Yeah i was also planning on landing in Mumbai, making my way to Goa and spending a while there. Though I've heard if you get to accustom to the lifestyle there you don't want to leave. Especially as its so cheap to live there as a backpacker.
So have you booked any train tickets in advance or are you planning on travelling on buses mainly? I think I'm going to travel any longish distances via train or plane as i get the impression any travel on the buses for more than an hour of so can be pretty uncomfortable.
Hey,
Im going to be in India about Jan/Feb 2013 and really looking forward to it. Arriving in Dehli, doing the golden triangle then slowly heading down to Bangalore via most of the West Coast. I have a Indian friend who was born in Dehli, so been getting some good advise off him.
Glad other people are traveling India. Been told its a total eye opener but when you get used to it, you wont want to leave! Bit scary going on my own but not thinking about it too much.
I've been advised to travel by train on longer journeys and take busses and other transport for the smaller ones.
Im kinda winging it tho!
Matt
HI, Yea same as Matt really, going to travel on trains for most longer journeys and maybe buses for shorter ones. But yea again, kinda going to wing it a bit as well. Not going to november so havn't looked into it in too much detail yet. But was thinking when landing in mumbai maybe spend a couple of days and fly down to goa (around £30) then when returning getting the train back up to mumbai and onwards.
ive heard that popular train routes get filled up really fast even with the tourist quota. so might have to do a bit more planning nearer the time.

What size backpack are you guys taking? I've heard its best to travel as light as possible and to be able to have it with you. Rather than in cargo holds on buses and planes etc.
i am going along yes. this will be my first big travel adventure going fo 12 months to the day. only gonna spend about 5 weeks there though.
i dont really have any plans sorted. i have booked a bed for the first two nights just so i have something sorted. (i booked it through this site actually, (Travellers Inn, which has the best reviews i have seen in mumbai (for the price anyway). after this im gonna keep it loose and just take what i can find.
taking as little as poss. i don't know what size my bag is but its defo one of the smaller ones in the shop.
I think i will prob take about a 45L pack. I am travelling around the world but stopping back in England for a couple of weeks so i can offload or pickup anything i need.
