In Bangkok go to Khao San Road where you'll meet lots of like minded people.
Bangkok are full of foreigners - you won't be lonely - trust me - I find random friends to hang out with around places where there are tourists all the time - especially at hostels and hotels where foreigners alike stay - such as LubD
Also, i must suggest you search through facebook fanpages - as they have been my new fascination lately bcos there r so many good groups to join to travel in Thailand.
For example - i'm a fan of Chang Beer so i joined their fanpage on Facebook - and i'm following how they're having a photo competition which gives away free tickets to Thailand - the cool part is that the competition is about finding cool places to go in Thailand - so they're very helpful!
Just a quick question with regards to taking the train from Surut Thani to Penang then KL and onto Singapore....
Can one by a multi stop ticket open ended from Bangkok?
Would be great to get some insight on this??

Bangkok is easy to do on your own. It has a good bus service. You can pick up a town, bus, BTS and MRT map in Khao San Road. Most buses are flat fare so you get on and off when you want. They go to most places.
Lots of 7-Eleven minimarts about. Pop into one and get two chicken or beef burgers and you can help yourself to all the onions, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumber, ketchup, mustard and mayonnaise you want for just over 40 baht.
Thailand and Malaysia are cheap but Singapore is expensive.
You can travel by bus, train or plane. Budget airlines like Air Asia are best booked early as prices go up as seats fill up so book early.
For accommodation try hostelbookers, hostelworld, asiarooms.
Coming into Malaysia can consider a land tour by using a coach service from north to south like Penang, Ipoh, Cameron Highland, KL, Malacca & Johor then from Johor easily go to Singapore. singapore everything are rather expensive, so maybe can consider stay in Johor Bahru and travel to Singapore daily at most one to two days can finish Singapore.

For travelling Thailand there is usually need to book rooms before you come as there is plenty of cheap accommodation. Exceptions would be in high season if you want a particular place and maybe for your first one or two nights just to get orientated. -snip-

Sounds great mate and just like you will be travelling on a shoestring budget and using as much of the public transport systems in Thailand as possible...I leave for Koh Samui on the 24th.... How far south are you looking to head? I will be making my way south all the way to Singapore then flying back to Bangkok on the 7 oct and flying by to the UK on the 10th..
