iPhone - take or leave at home?

Hey everyone
Just wanted some opinions on whether or not people recommend taking iPhones overseas. If the answer is yes, how do you make sure that it's safe when you carry it around with you? would you keep it in a money belt?
Would really appreciate some advice
Thanks

Hi Swanderer,

personally I always take my iphone while travelling because it makes everything so much more convenient. I use the TripIt app to schedule my travel itinerary, different dictionaries or even offline navigation apps whenever I get lost.
In my opinion the safest place is to always carry it with you. I put it in my jeans front pocket. It doesn´t has much room without being too uncomfortable, so I would notice it if someone tried to pull it out.
And in the unlikely case your iphone might get stollen after all, you can still track it or block it by using Apples "my Iphone" site/app.

Another piece of advice concerning theft: in touristic places you often see signs warning you about being careful about your valuables. Many people instinctively put a hand on the place where they carry their valuables. Try refraining from doing that, because thieves often use that as a tell-tale.

I'd take it as well. You can always worry about it being stolen but in my experience there is nearly equal chance of that happening at home too and I have it with me all the time there Plus, if it means you don't have to carry a laptop or iPad, considerably larger items which you wion't be able to have on your person nearly as much as a phone, then it actually cuts back on risk...

Take it! If not for anything else, for the GPS feature.

definitely take the iphone!
i took mine to North america in december and instead of taking a camera i would just use my iphone. however, unless youre very clumsy person that loses things regularly, maybe dont take it out to nightclubs. you could end up not knowing what happened and losing the iphone on the way. ive had friends thats happened to too many times.

I'd say in depends where you are going.

Keep in mind that if you have "roaming" charges, especially in different states or different countries, those data download charges are going to add up quick, quick, quick

Another question has to do with how often you will be contacting your work or them you if you take the phone. Some people say they have to do this--others consider this a major intrusion. I took my phone with me a few years ago for my Christmas vacation and had a pushy boss. As a result, I ended up working 5 hours on it on Christmas eve while everyone else was waiting for me to join them for Christmas dinner. (Won't do that again--and no I don't work for that person anymore).

Also--do you need to phone--or do you really want a vacation? I use my phone all the time on workdays, but try to limit my time on weekends. Otherwise I spend more time with the technology than with my family. (as you can see I have that problem sometimes with web sites also--or else I would't be on here at 1:20 AM local time on a Friday night).

Anyway, just a few things to consider.
