I am planning on going to Cairo as well! I will be going solo (for now), after Greece. I even want to hit Istanbul before Cairo. I will probably be getting there around late September (2012). Safe or not, it'll be fun!

I can say that Egypt is pretty safe for tourists, despite the political unrest. If you insist on visiting Cairo, be aware that it has a lot of "movement" & protests occasionally occur on Fridays (day-off here) which I recommend you should avoid.
The rest of Egypt is very well isolated from the current political scene. Especially in the shores' areas (Red sea & The Mediterranean). If you do have some time, Egypt in my humble opinion has much more to offer in a nicer way than Cairo.

IT IS very hot already...
Temperatures now are starting to rise, reaching 34C on most weekdays. July, August & September are the hottest months, especially of you were heading south. But at late September , temperatures are supposed to fall.

The best time to go would be in the winter -

Egypt is really worthwhile - but do your planning right, before you leave home.
