Hey Andy I'm not sure about your specific situation, I'm buying a ticket from Reno to Sydney, but some of the best travel/flight sites I've found are these:
momondo.com
farecompare.com
kayak.com
Using those sites, I've found tickets AT LEAST $400 cheaper than on other sites. Momondo is currently my favorite- I found a ticket $100 cheaper than on any of the other sites. Also, if you look on farecompare.com it has a really good travel calender which will let you know the cheapest travel dates...things are going to be slightly more expensive around December 20th (so close to Christmas) so you might want to pick a date a few days before then. Definitely look at the travel calendar and pick your dates using that Best of luck!

It will most likely be more expensive having the return date so far apart, have you tried at a travel agent to get a rough idea of what your looking at paying?
