Shame ur not going a bit earlier because this sounds perfect! Alth hiring a car round the nat. parks might make that part a bit easier and a bit more fun! X
Well if you're looking for parks the Redwood forrest is just south of San Fran and it's quite amazing. Yosemite is also 4 hours away which is a trip but it's not as far as Arizona or anything and it's one of the most beautiful parks in California if not the most beautiful. Heading north or south from San Fran it's going to take you a long while before you see anything pretty. It's about 5 hours to Oregon which is also very pretty as well. If you don't mind renting a car and driving for a bit you could also take the 1, aka Pacific Coast Highway, aka the 101 that runs along the very coast of the united states up into Oregon then go over to Crater Lake which is one of the most beautiful places in the US. There's a lot of beauty you're just going to have to drive for a bit unfortunately.
Pretty much the exact trip im about to do mate!
Im going to be wandering the West Coast with similar transport ideas/priorities etc from 17May- 17July.
