Finding work in Australia will depend on the kind of work you're after. I don't think it's much easier or harder than elsewhere and it helps if you have something lined up before you come.
There's all the usual places on the East coast:
- The Blue Mountains - Hiking, camping, views
- Sydney
- Byron Bay - Surfing, relaxed beach vibe
- The Gold Coast - theme parks, beach
- Fraser Island - 4x4 and camping, beautiful lakes
- The Whitsundays - sailing, snorkelling
- Cairns - snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree, Atherton tablelands waterfalls
I was born in The Blue Mountains, it's beautiful scenery... creepy crawlies galore though. Now I live in QLD, I can suggest visiting Brisbane it's a beautiful city (Although Melbourne's better but colder) Heading up North I agree with The Gold Coast (especially if you like surfy places) Also, do yourself a favour and check out The Whitsundays, I went there for a holiday and it's really beautiful.. although might be a bit expensive, it's a popular tourist destination. Probably wouldn't suggest going to Cairns during summer, I don't know what country you're from but unless you're used to heat and humidity I'd probably avoid it.
As for work, I suggest handing in CV's in person once you get here, might be a bit hard if you don't have a car, getting work online is tough and rarely works out in my experience because too many people apply.

I'm looking to go this time next year as well. From what I've heard it's best to find work either April-May up North (Cairns and such) and September-October for down South. The Aussie summer is then and all the university kids will be looking for similar jobs around this time. Like the previous posters, I've heard great things about both Fraser Island and The Whitsundays, I'm definently fitting these two in on my trip down the East Coast.
Just be active once you get to the Oz in finding a job and I think you should be good, there is always fruit picking if you cannot find a simple regional job.
