I have just joined. I'm starting the research for a trip from Western Canada to events of the War of 1812 in Eastern Canada. Will be travelling with my 85 lb German Shepherd X companion. I'll probably be driving and camping along the way. Will be greatful for any advice and tips.

Old Fort Henry is located in Kingston, Ontario. Kingston is at the mouth of the Rideau Canal, it was created to provide and alternate route to get supplies to Upper Canada if the river were to be controlled by the Americans.
I have been to the Battle of Crysler Farm Re-enactment in the past. Lost of musket and cannon fire... Probably not the best place to take a dog. Leave the dog in the RV or at the camp ground.
Long-Sault Provincial Park is close to the location of the re-enactment + Upper Canada Village would be a good visit.

You should probably not bother with visiting Washington DC as they probably won't have a celebration of when the "Canadians" set it on fire!
Undoubtedly there will be no War of 1812 celebration in Washington, DC--but you might check out either Fort McHenry (in Baltimore) where the words to our national anthem were written during the battle there (in September 1814), or else New Orleans.
The main celebration of the War of 1812 already took place in April of this year in New Orleans

if you wait until December 2014 or January 2015 or so, you could visit New Orleans during the 200th anniversary of the Battle that took place there. Oddly enough, this battle took place after a peace treaty between the warring factions had already been signed. Since it took so long to send messages back then, neither of the two armies in New Orleans knew about the peace treaty at the time of the battle.

P.S. One of the main commanders of Fort McHenry after the War of 1812 was Robert E. Lee--who set up the fort to train army officers in case of a war against Mexico. This war, which took place in 1848-1849, led to Robert E. Lee becoming well-known--and to his later being offered command of both the north (which he declined) and the south (which he accepted) forces during the American Civil War.
