Help,I am leaving Chicago with my dog on a 2 week road trip. Driving straight to Vegas to drop a friend off, then I would like to go to Cambria on PCH after that can't decide if I should go south through Grand Canyon, New Mexico and back to Chicago, or blow off Cambria go through Yosemite to coast and go north along coast then back east. Any ideas and I dint mind driving each day.
Why not go through New Mexico and visit the Grand Canyon on the way from Chicago (essentially, the old US route 66)--and then go direct to Cambria. On the return to Chicago, cut through Yosemite, then go north to Reno/Tahoe--and then it's Interstate 80 all the way direct to Chicago (via Salt Lake City and Park City in Utah, and Cheyenne in Wyoming).
P.S. I've mapped Chicago to Las Vegas direct (1,751 miles--and 27 hours) versus via New Mexico (Albuquerque and Santa Fe) and the Grand Canyon (2,049 miles--and 33 hours). It seems to me that taking an extra 6 hours on the way to avoid having to backtrack or miss some really tremendous sites (like Cambria and Yosemite or the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe) would be worth it. The route to take is Interstate 55 from Chicago to St. Louis, then Interstate 44 to Oklahoma City, then Interstate 40 west until the turnoff for Santa Fe (US 285 north), then Interstate 40 on west to Flagstaff, where you get US 180 north to the Grand Canyon, and then state highway 64 back to Williams, then Interstate 40 west to Kingman and US 93 north to Las Vegas.
Spent one night and had two rooms. No, they are not five star, but they are certainly a cut above for the money. Quiet clean and comfy. Most of the staff were plainly good folks and conversational; more like in Laughlin, Nev. Easy freeway access. The $10 prime rib was possibly not as tender as some, but a great value....
Thank you for the suggestion to go to other sites before Vegas but I have to go to Vegas first to drop someone off, so then it becomes go to cabria and back to grand canyon and back or what about going north through Tahoe, Oregon coast etc any ideas
