Credit Card

Is it safe to use credit cards aborad?
Is it wise and is it cost efficient?
What is your take on this?

Credit/Debit Cards have been by far the most popular choice for handling transactions while travelling abroad for many years now. I suspect since before you were born.

What other options were you considering? Cash? Traveller's Cheques?

Cheers,
Terry

To take it one step further... there are some specific places where Credit/Debit Cards don't work very well, but these are unlikely destinations for an inexperienced or first time traveller.

Where are you from and where are you thinking of going?

Cheers,
Terry

There are alternatives - a sort of travel card, depending which country you are from but I would imagine they are fairly widely available.

I use one which is linked to my debit card, I top it up via my debit card online so I ensure there is only a small amount of balance in it (should it get copied and the account emptied) - also, the advantage is with some of these cards you don't get charged ATM fees when abroad.

Put "travel cash cards" or similar into google and you should be directed to a decent price comparison site that will explain the pros and cons of each card.

I also carry an amount of travellers cheques for emergencies (always ensure you keep the receipt that shows the serial numbers) and a small amount of US dollars, also for emergencies.

Cheers,
Carolyn.

Thank you for your replies. I am a first time traveller and hae no experience travelling.
I am participating in a fundraising event which takes place at the Great Wall of China.

She want to be safe and have easy access to cash but not pay high credit card charges etc.

But I am leaving today and I hope I am all sorted.

Thank you again for taking the time to reply.

I will let you know how it went.

Cheers
Razia

I would recommend against traveler's cheques. Their use is somewhat antiquated. Credit cards are definitely the best option. Be sure you use one that does not charge a foreign transaction fee of 3% that many credit cards enforce. In addition, there are several bank accounts that will not charge a fee for any ATM withdrawal worldwide. These accounts can be quite the financial lifesaver.
