34M Aussie lone travaller through SE asia

Hi, I'm Paul. I'm 34 and male travelling through south east asia in mid June.

Planning on doing more or less the same trip later on this year, going to eavesdrop on your post for some tips if you don't mind

Me too..

Have those countries in my lists.. but have to set all my works away and set the budget for the trip..
Will follow your travel experiences if you don't mind to share..

No worries, i'm heading off in two days so i will try and remember to post anything unusal or perhaps helpful.

I suspect i will not really be able to share anything other travellers have not already shared though, that said i suppose we are all a bit different (and possibly the same).

The freewheeling aspect of the whole trip is what appeals the most.

Whoo hoo!!

Hey Guys,

Advice wise all you need is, Go. The experience of being on the road, seeing things you wouldn't normally see, the sights, the sounds, the smells, all alien, slightly scary, very intriguing, it all pulls you in, you will meet heaps of other travellers on the road, some you will connect with more than others, listen to them all then decide which pieces of advice to use and which to discard, its all part of the thrill of independent travel.

The fact that the challenge of what lies ahead excites you is enough to tell me you'll find your own path, good luck, stay safe and happy travels.

Andy

It's very easy to make up your plans as you go. Tourism is huge all over SE Asia and there are travel agents everywhere. You'll meet loads of other travellers along the way who will always be willing to offer advice/tips on the latest places to see or things to do.

I only have two pieces of advice for you:

1) When you're booking anything through the travel agents selling bus trips or packages is know what you're paying for!! Often they will include accommodation at a specific guesthouse at your destination. You are not obligated to use that guesthouse, but good luck getting your money back if you decide not to.

2) Don't be afraid to request a new room or leave a place entirely if it's not up to par. Most places in SE Asia are fine, but there are some real dives out there. One place I checked out in Vang Vieng, Laos had an ant colony living in the bed mattress!!

The only other thing I can tell you is have a great trip! You'll love it.
